Effect of saline exposure on the surface and bulk properties of medical grade silicone elastomers.
Medical-grade silicone elastomers were subjected to accelerated aging in saline to verify the hydrolytic stability of the elastomer. Tensile strength, elongation at break, and the elastomer stress measured at 100% or 200% elongation did not change significantly for peroxide-cured sheeting aged in 37 degrees C or 100 degrees C saline for 45 h. Under similar condition, hydrosilylation cured sheet...
متن کاملPolyurethane elastomers as maxillofacial prosthetic materials.
A series of polyurethane elastomers based on an aliphatic diisocyanate and a polyether macroglycol was polymerized with various cross-link densities and OH/NCO ratios. Stoichiometries yielding between 8,600 and 12,900 gm/mole/crosslink and an OH/NCO ratio of 1.1 resulted in polymers with the low modulus, yet high strength and elongation necessary for maxillofacial applications.

Silicone vascular catheters have a greater risk of infection and produce greater inflammation in vivo and greater complement activation in vitro than other vascular catheter polymer materials. This study investigated whether polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMNL) chemotaxis under agarose on silicone surfaces is different than on polyurethane (PU). Glass slides were coated with silicone and PU by us...
متن کاملSpecific interactions, structure and properties in segmented polyurethane elastomers
Two sets of segmented polyurethane (PU) elastomers were prepared from 4,4!-methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate) (MDI), 1,4-butanediol (BD) and a polyester or a polyether polyol, respectively. The molecular mass of both polyols was 1000 g/mol. The stoichiometric ratio of isocyanate and hydroxyl groups was 1 and the polyol/total diol ratio changed from 0 to 1 in 0.1 steps. One step bulk polymerization...
متن کاملPreferential Nanoreinforcement of Thermoplastic Polyurethane Elastomers with Dispersed Nano-Clay
It is difficult for scientists to engineer elastomeric materials that are both strong and tough like spider dragline silk. Inspired by the morphology of spider dragline silk and motivated to develop strong, tough, elastomeric polyurethanes to be used in soldier applications I have prepared polyurethane/clay nanocomposites. Polymer/clay nanocomposites have exhibited great potential for providing...
